Our leadership perception is a measure of how we respond to the world. Think of it at a scale. At one end are the confident leaders, who bring clarity and conviction. At the other end are the sensitive leaders, who respond and engage. Which are you?

The truth is that all of us are a mixture of both. But to what extent? Are we actually balanced in both? Or do we have a strong or slight leaning towards one side of this scale? Nothing is right or wrong here, but it is helpful to know our preferences in our various roles so we play to our strengths and recognise our weaknesses.

Do You Respond To Things Confidently or Sensitively?

I’ve served leaders who carried strong feelings and sensitivity – passionate, whole-hearted, and committed. They brought energy and dynamism to their work. But sometimes, in their whole-heartedness, emotion clouded their judgment or insecurities or instabilities impacted what they did – and who they worked alongside. Contrasted with those are leaders who had an approach much more consistent, considered, and confident. Level-headed and clear-minded, they bought stability and steadiness to proceedings – yet could be arrogant, aloof, or unyielding.

What makes someone a confident or sensitive leader? Each leadership style is defined by five ‘drivers’ – behaviours that characterise it. The more of these behaviours we are naturally fluent in, the more likely we are to flow in the relevant leadership style. You can see the five drivers for each leadership style here:

Both leadership styles have clear drivers that shape how they function, but each driver can also be overemphasised or overused, for example during times of anxiety, stress or pressure. They then turn from a strength into a weakness. These drivers become ‘dysfunctions’ and you can see the five dysfunctions for each leadership style here:

Discovering if we are strong, slight, or balanced in our confident or sensitive leaning is key for our personal leadership discovery. Romans 12:8 tells us that those with the gift of leadership should lead with zeal. The Greek word here translated ‘zeal’ carries a sense of urgency or wholeheartedness. Biblically, we are called to lead in all our fullness! Knowing our natural leadership leaning is the first step in this.
