In this fast-changing world of faith and technology, we stand at the beginning of something incredibly significant. As churches, we don’t want to fall into the trap of missing on opportunities because we are tied to existing methods. I am convinced that Digital Church Ministry – the world of online services, ministries, and technology to serve and reach people – is an exciting doorway available for ‘digital churches’ to spread the Gospel of the Kingdom to the world.

It’s a new era where digital connections and ministries can change lives and communities like never before, but we, as church leaders, must take the opportunity we have been presented with.

For over 25 years, I’ve seen how Christian media can have a powerful impact. Now, I want to show you the possibilities of “Digital Ministry.” It’s a way for every church to reach people beyond its walls and bring real transformation. An online, digital presence will help churches do what Jesus did – go to the places the people were so He could minister to them.

Let me ask you two questions to start:

How can you ensure your congregation is being discipled in a media-filled world?

How can you reach and engage with those who may never cross the threshold of a church?

Let me state upfront, Digital Ministry is NOT the sole answer; we must have in-person gatherings and in-person discipleship and all the other aspects of the church as usual – but digital ministries cannot be overlooked; they are too important. The reality is that in todays culture, churches need to be ‘online’ as well as ‘offline’. We need more than just analogue churches. We need digital churches too.

I’ve been working with Christian media for over 25 years. In 1995, I joined the UK’s first Christian TV station, and our small team was passionate about using TV broadcasting for the Kingdom.

Initially, part of my job was to convince churches to create content for our TV station so that it would be relevant to our audience.

Sadly, some churches were not interested in reaching people through the opportunity we presented them, which puzzled me. I often asked them, “Who is discipling and teaching your people through TV? Don’t you want to be part of that?” Their response still baffles me.

Since my early days in Christian TV, the media landscape has changed. Everyone, including churches, now has the direct opportunity to have a voice through the internet, social media, and apps. No longer do TV channels have all the power. Digital ministries allow the church a platform to influence those they may not otherwise come into contact with.

But now, it’s become even more important to ask: “Who is discipling your congregation amidst the constant media messages they encounter?”

That’s why every church and leader should embrace “Digital Ministry.” It means using modern communication methods to reach beyond the church walls.

Think about it: You may see your congregation for about 3 hours a week, But the average user of Social Media in 2023 spends 2 hours and 31 minutes every day on it – and (in case you thought TV was dead) in the UK in 2022, the average time watching LIVE TV (not even considering Netflix etc) was 2 hours and 24 minutes.

So, who is discipling your congregation?

Digital Ministry is vital to connect with your existing congregation, reach people who don’t know Jesus, and influence the broader culture.

I don’t expect you, as church leaders, to take on Digital Ministry alone. Instead, make it a core part of your church’s mission and vision. Find passionate individuals to lead this effort as you do with worship, prayer, and children’s work. Our churches have mission fields before them we’re barely scratching the surface of.

If you’re unsure where to start or need to refocus your current efforts (perhaps you began after being “forced” to do so because of Covid and now are wondering where next?) I’ve identified five essential areas to consider:

To help you assess your digital ministry, I’ve created the “Digital Ministry Assessment.” It takes about 15 minutes to complete, and after you take it,  you’ll receive by email a detailed report that will tell you how you are doing currently and give you actionable steps to see real improvement in each area.

Digital Ministry has the power to impact lives profoundly. Let me share a story about Sally, whose life was changed by Jesus through the Christian TV station I was part of. After a troubled past of abuse, drugs, alcoholism and homelessness, she found Jesus through our ministry. Today, she helps hundreds of others in need, all because of digital outreach.

Imagine the lives your ministry could touch and change if you embrace Digital Ministry and explore its potential.

Over the rest of this series of articles, I will explore the five core components of digital ministry outlined above so you can find out how to build something impactful and sustainable.

The next article in this series will help you with connecting with and identifying your audience.

So, consider: how is your church using digital tools to connect with your congregation and others?

As a church leader, how do you ensure your congregation accesses the discipleship resources they need in this digital age?

Digital Ministry opens up unique opportunities for your church to make a real impact. Using digital tools and strategies, you can connect with your congregation and reach people who may never cross the threshold of your church building. Embrace this chance to impact people in the digital world. Together, let’s change lives for the better.
